Some dryers are offering a new feature referred to as “Flow Sense” or “Check Vent” Indicators…but are they to be considered “Safety Features?”

PRLog (Press Release) – Jun 09, 2010 – Murrieta, CA – Dryer duct cleaning remains the number one way to prevent dryer fires and promote dryer efficiency. Some new dryers include a sensor to indicate if the dryer vent system is blocked. These new features can help enhance dryer performance, but manufacturers are not calling them safety features.
Steve Gors, franchise owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in Murrieta was recently asked about safety features on clothes dryers. He explained, “Dryer vent cleaning is the only way to be completely safe. The new features are great, but don’t count on them! Consumer Reports did a study and the results were inconsistent. Sometimes the indicators worked, sometimes they did not.”
Consumer Reports says these indicators cannot be relied on to alert people to a blocked dryer vent system. All clothes dryers, with or without these new features, should be connected to a metal dryer duct that is vented to the outdoors. “Even the very best clothes dryer, with all the newest features, and a state-of-the-art dryer vent system, will require dryer vent cleaning periodically to enhance safety and efficiency,” said Gors. “No one has even come close to inventing a maintenance free clothes dryer.”
A good clothes dryer can range from $500 – 1,200. Custom programming and automatic dry sensors do a great job in promoting dryer efficiency. Steve Gors advises his customers to have their dryer vent system inspected and cleaned annually to keep their clothes dryers running safely and efficiently. “It is not necessary to buy the most expensive model,” said Gors. “The most important part of a clothes dryer’s function is the dryer duct and vent. Without a proper dryer vent system, even the very best dryer will not operate efficiently.”
Dryer Vent Wizard franchisees across the U.S. are on a mission to make over one million clothes dryers safer and greener by the year 2011. Visit http://www.dryerventwizard.com to learn more.
