  • Vacation (timeshare) ownership began in the late 1960s in the French Alps as an alternative to renting expensive hotel rooms.  The concept soon attracted many prominent resort developers and hoteliers in the United States.
  • Worldwide, the number of timeshare owners has risen dramatically.  From a 155,000-timeshare owners in 1980, that figure jumped to over 6.2 million by the end of about 2000, a 2000% increase. 
  • By 2002, the vacation ownership industry accounted for the fastest growth of the worldwide travel and tourism.  Worldwide vacation ownership sales generated an estimated $11.8 billion in 2004. The vacation ownership industry in the USA alone generated sales totaling $8.6 billion in 2005.  By January 1, 2006, most of the timeshare owners are North Americans with over 1600 vacation resorts to choose from in the USA alone.   Europeans are the second most numerous vacation interval owners in the world.    
  • Global vacation ownership (timeshare) industry sales remain vibrant today.  Vacation ownership sales tend to continue worldwide in spite of economic recessions.  Net sales grew substantially in the USA and the Americas. By January 1, 2007, over 4 million American households owned one or more weekly vacation timeshare intervals  or points equivalent ownerships.
  • Today, timeshare interval owners have vacation exchange opportunities to  more   than  5,400 world class resorts in over 100 countries.
