The city of Winnipeg decided to challenge Ottawa’s long held title for the largest skating rink in the world. Winnipeg’s skate way travels along the Assiniboine and Red Rivers. In 2009, Winnipeg’s skating trail out-distanced Ottawa’s skate way by 2.25 kilometres (1.4 miles). The city of Ottawa’s ice flood crews maintained a 7.72 kilometre (4.8 miles) skating surface. Winnipeg’s skating trail measured about 9.98 kilometres (6.2 miles) the same year. In January of 2008, Wikipedia tells us that “... Winnipeg, Manitoba achieved the record of the world's longest skating rink at a length of 8.54 kilometers, but with a width of only 2 to 3 meters wide,[11] on its Assiniboine River and Red River at The Forks. In response, the Rideau Canal was rebranded as "the world's largest skating rink".” Acceptably, Winnipeg’s skate trail may be relatively new when compared to Ottawa’s skate way that was managed since the 1970-1971, but each year it gets decorated with more Christmas trees and warm-up huts that attract skaters from both sides of the River. Well there you have it folks! If Ottawa’s skate way is known as “the largest skating rink in the world,” then Winnipeg’s skating trail is “the longest skating rink in the world”.
The 2010 season put a damper on that friendly feud. It had to be suspended due to unusual weather conditions in both cities. I bet the skaters here and there are probably too busy to notice that there is even any sort of competition going on anyway!
