The Montreal Biodome (Biodôme de Montréal in French) is one of four Nature Museums in one of the most beautiful cities in North America and a great place to visit for a family with children. It has animals, fish, and landscaped gardens. Over 4,800 animals and 750 plant species reside in this oasis. This 100,000 plus square foot museum opened its doors to the public in June of 1992. Over 15 million visitors have already seen this ecological wonderland, 845,000 visitors in 2008 alone.
Families and children can look forward to seeing four of the most beautiful and exciting recreations of ecosystems of the Americas you will ever see under one roof – the Tropical Rain Forest, the Laurentian Maple Forest, the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence Marine Ecosystem and the Arctic and Antarctic Polar Regions – so there is literally something for everyone. You will find convenient touch screen terminals in each of the ecoregions to help you interpret what you see along the pathways. Audio listening devices (audio guides) and/or binoculars are also available to guide your learning or visual experience.
Naturalia: A Permanent Exhibits Room (located in basement of Biodome) .
If you have some more time on your hands, don’t forget to see Naturalia. It’s housed in the basement of the Biodome and is home to a fun-filled nature exhibition with various hands-on learning exhibits devoted to animal and plant life exploration. Adults very much enjoy this hands-on exhibit as a wind down activity prior to visiting the Biodome Boutique or the cafeteria on the main floor, but it should be of particular interest to children between the ages of 6 to 12. Best of all, it’s already included in the price of your ticket.
The Biodôme’s friendly mascot,Rana the Frog, has this to say about the Naturalia Discovery Room.
It’s a real treasure trove for kids like you, with all sorts of things
I bet you’ve never seen before, and tons of games!
WAITING FOR YOU TO DISCOVER
Five super-interesting zones, full of games to play as you find
out how animals:
• live in and out of water;
• adapt to heat and cold;
• move about in the water, on the ground and in the air;
• use their different senses: sight, hearing, smell;
• defend and feed themselves.
A reading corner with loads of kids’ books on nature.
Computers where you can consult the Biodôme’s Website and
have fun learning as you play all sorts of on-line games.
Magnifying glasses and microscopes, for examining butterfly
wings, feathers, insects and more.
SEE IF YOU CAN…
• Walk like a heron, a raccoon or a lynx. Try to follow their
footsteps.
• Identify the smells of strawberry, vanilla and ginger.
• Pick up and “try on” some moose or caribou antlers.
• Compare the bones in your leg with the ones in a horse’s leg.
• Stroke the soft pelts of an otter, a beaver and a lynx.
• Guess how much a whale weighed just by looking at one
of its ribs or its backbone.
• Count an alligator’s teeth, a shark’s vertebrae and a
millipede’s legs (no, there aren’t a thousand)!
And there’s lots more fun waiting for you! You’ll never be bored in the Naturalia room!
(But what’s that other voice we can hear, from elsewhere in the basement: “Rana! Save something for me to
say! I want them to come see me, too!”)
