The city of Naples was our home for about seven of our glorious days in Italy. No train goes to Gaeta from there. We took the train to nearby Formia. Gaeta is only about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of Formia and 95 kilometers (59 miles) north of Naples. We left the Formia train station for the beaches of Gaeta. It is a 30-minute ride using the city bus. Your thirty minutes go by quickly though. Your eyes are busy attending to some of the most beautiful unseen resources and treasures that this “city-beach” has to offer. There is something to satisfy everyone here. Culture seekers, history buffs, restaurant connoisseurs and shopping gurus can explore this charming little town to their hearts content.

The town itself is part of a peninsula that juts out to the Gulf of Gaeta (Tyrrhenian Sea) so a magnificent choice of white sandy beaches is at your feet. There are seven in all, but only four of them are open to the public: Arianta, Fontania, Sant’Agostino and Serapo. Some beaches come equipped complete with beach recliner beds, chairs and umbrellas for about 20 Euros. For another 6 Euros, you can purchase one of those inflatable water toys or dinghies from the passing vendor to ensure hours of fun with your little ones. Outdoor shower stands and change rooms are included in the price. A roof top enclosed restaurant is on the premises if you want to get a bite to eat. Alternatively, other restaurants are also available outside the paid premises. There are also beach fronts that do without all this gear and still other beaches, like Serapo, that appeal to local surfing gurus and wind-surfers. Serapo beach goers also love to go jet skiing, sea kayaking, and snorkeling. Whichever beach you decide on, be sure to stop for a scoop of gelato. This local variant of ice cream, but lower in butterfat, is a must-try frozen desert before you head on back home.
