Welding Science
Ukrainian scientists are well known throughout the world for mastering the field of electric welding. Yevhen Paton (aka Evgeny Paton) was a Professor of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute and founder of the 1934 E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine . Yevhen Oskarovych Paton lived in the Ukrainian capital and worked at his beloved Institute until his dying days.

The Paton Bridge opened its gates to automobile traffic November 5, 1953. It was named after its designer and constructor shortly after his death on July 12, 1953. It is the first ever all-welded application of electric welding to bridge construction. Today, the Scientific–Technical Research Centre E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute is headed by his son Borys Paton (or Boris Paton) who pursued his father’s footsteps to continue work in this field. It was B. Paton’s research that leads to the development and use of semiautomatic submerged arc welding equipment and gas shielded welding.

Paton Boris Evgenyevich has a long history of carrying out fruitful welding research initiatives under water as well as in space. In 1969, Soviet Russian astronaut Valery Nikolayevich Kubasov performed the world’s first welding tests in space via electron beam, plasma and consumable electrode using the Ukrainian designed “Vulkan” unit developed at the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute in Kyiv. This event opened the doors to a host of other new technologies and processes deployed in space.
Welding Research Trends in the New Millennium
The E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute in Ukraine continues to exploit other advantages of welding and related technologies into the new century. The high-frequency welding of human tissue is but one exciting recent example of the Ukrainian Electric Welding Institute’s research initiatives. It has been performing surgical welds on soft human tissue over the last 10 years on some 80,000 patients. The Ukrainian clinics perform 120 different variations of soft welds directly on their patients, said the Welding Institute’s Director Borys Paton in one of his latest interviews with the Ukrainian press. It is more efficient and there is much less loss of blood using sealed seams, said the academician. The Institute soon hopes to demonstrate its welding know-how on human bones.
