CANADIAN MUSEUM FOR HUMAN RIGHTS — A CALL FOR INCLUSIVENESS, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS
Featured Article #2
The CMHR represents a unique opportunity for Canada to be recognized as a leader in reflecting and further advancing contemporary research on genocide and human rights and in telling the story of all genocides without any attempt to represent the suffering of one nation, tribe or community as having been of more relevance or importance than any other’s. All attempts to do so argue fundamentally do an injustice to the memory of the many millions of victims of genocide throughout the ages, whether they suffered in Europe, or somewhere else.

How did Canada get its name? Most Canadians, if asked about the origins of the name “Canada”, will admittedly lament their ignorance of that part of Canadian history. Of those that do remember, they might even recall the “official” version of how Canada got its name, the one they received from the TV commercial “A Part Of Our Heritage – Canada.” After all, Canadian history is not a subject taught in the schools, per se. Education remains in provincial jurisdiction so each region features their preferred understandings of Canada’s history. As such, there are many competing theories on how Canada came to be known and called. All of them fascinating and equally compelling, but only three theories tend to capture the hearts and minds of historians and researchers more so than the others. They are presented here momentarily.

MEDVEDEV-MERKEL DUO BEGUN A CAMPAIGN OF EXCUSING STALIN AND HITLER
By Yuriy Syrotyuk
Global Politician
According to the ITAR-TASS news agency, on the 14th of August 2009 at a joint press conference with Russian President D. Medvedev in Sochi (Russian Federation), German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured the Russian leader that Germany would resist any heroization of Nazism and National Socialism in Ukraine.
This brutal invective launched towards the Ukrainian nation, which carried on its shoulders the main burden of World War II that was unleashed by Moscow and Berlin, shows that the so-called "Shroederization” (Euro-bureaucrats being on the Kremlin’s payroll) has reached its peak. This process has affected the German political establishment to such an extent, that it has now transformed into a new critical state, namely “Merkelizm”, when in exchange for “Russian gas” and various "investments" Germany is even ready to become an ordinary mouthpiece for the propaganda of the Kremlin’s own Goebbelses.
The Russian President endorsed Merkel’s statement and said that he does not envisage any possibilities for the resumption of normal relations between Russia and Ukraine while the current Ukrainian administration is in power. The All-Ukrainian Union "Freedom" believes that Ukraine has to react firmly to the "Sochi Conspiracy". First, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine must summon the ambassadors of Germany and the Russian Federation (the latter being the newly-appointed Zurabov) and present them with notes of protest regarding the interference of their heads of state in the internal affairs of Ukraine.
Secondly, it’s the duty of Ukraine’s leadership to give a political assessment of the revanchist statements of Merkel and Medvedev, which were made on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Moscow pact, historically known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. As per this pact, Soviet Russia and Germany divided Europe among themselves and unleashed the Second World War. It is clear that Merkel and Medvedev are worried about the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s recent decision, in which it equated Communism and Nazism and proposed to introduce an annual pan-European Remembrance Day on the 23rd of August (the anniversary of the signing of the Moscow pact) to commemorate the victims of Communism and Nazism.
Essentially, the Medvedev-Merkel duo begun a campaign of excusing Stalin and Hitler, considering the fact that the Moscow pact of 1939 envisaged broad economic cooperation which was used by Moscow and Berlin to justify the emergence of their respective "spheres of interest in Eastern Europe”, namely the occupation of independent states.
The Merkel and Medvedev reactionaries are annoyed by the existence of an independent Ukrainian state, which arose on the ruins of that empire, which over the course of the last century has managed to murder millions of Ukrainians. The noticeably simultaneous Russo-German invective towards Ukraine was delivered right before the 18th anniversary of our Independence. The Independence, which is covered by the blood of Ukrainian fighters who fought both against the Soviet Union as well as against the Third Reich.
This is not the first time when Ukraine’s former occupying powers openly indicate their hostility towards Ukrainians. Both the Federal Republic of Germany and the Russian Federation have not yet recognized the famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine as a deliberately orchestrated genocide of the Ukrainian nation, and, in fact, during a recent visit to Ukraine Merkel herself purposefully and openly refused to honor the memory of the victims of the Holodomor. The anti-Ukrainian actions of the former occupying powers are clearly synchronized: on the one hand the Kremlin is hiding evidence of its crimes against Ukrainians and is trying to shift responsibility for the famine on its puppets – the local government of the “Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic”, while on the other hand, Germany is laying the guilt for its Nazi past on Ivan Demyanyuk, and, despite all legal norms, calling him a “criminal” before the conclusion of his trial.
It can be seen with the naked eye that Angela Merkel has long been working as, essentially, Russia’s “lawyer” in Europe. Striking examples of this fact include Germany’s poorly camouflaged pro-Moscow position during the Russian "forcing to peace" of Georgia as well as the "gas war" against Ukraine.
In the future one should expect speculation regarding territories that were incorporated into so-called "Soviet Ukraine" as per the agreements between Stalin and Hitler, and the subsequent advancement of territorial claims to Ukraine. In view of this, the leadership of Ukraine must emphasize the fact that today’s Ukraine is the direct heir of the UPR (Ukrainian People’s Republic) and the ZUPR (West Ukrainian People’s Republic), that united into a single state on the 22nd of January 1919, which was destroyed by the Russo-Bolshevik aggressors, that substituted it with the puppet “Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic” regime.
The All-Ukrainian Union "Freedom" urges the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko to make a firm decision prior to the 67th anniversary of the creation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and recognize the OUN-UIA fighters as those that fought for Ukraine’s independence. The President must also posthumously award Stepan Bandera with the “Hero of Ukraine” state honour, in this, the hundredth year since his birth. This is the only way to forever end all the speculation surrounding events related to the Ukrainian liberation struggle. This is the best way to protect Ukrainians from the conspiratorial propaganda of its former occupying powers, that are constantly trying to tell us who we should have for our heroes.
Ukraine’s leadership must remember that cowardly policies of ignoring threats, humbly accepting brutal invectives and hoping to "appease the aggressor”, be it Moscow or Berlin, will always lead to catastrophic results.
Danger looms over Ukraine and the states unfriendly to us do not even think it necessary to hide this. The realization of this fact must unite the Ukrainian nation so that it will resist any violation of our sovereignty.
