CANADIAN MUSEUM FOR HUMAN RIGHTS — A CALL FOR INCLUSIVENESS, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS
Featured Article #2
The CMHR represents a unique opportunity for Canada to be recognized as a leader in reflecting and further advancing contemporary research on genocide and human rights and in telling the story of all genocides without any attempt to represent the suffering of one nation, tribe or community as having been of more relevance or importance than any other’s. All attempts to do so argue fundamentally do an injustice to the memory of the many millions of victims of genocide throughout the ages, whether they suffered in Europe, or somewhere else.

The Almond Tree Sweetens Up the Market at The Forks
How did Canada get its name? Most Canadians, if asked about the origins of the name “Canada”, will admittedly lament their ignorance of that part of Canadian history. Of those that do remember, they might even recall the “official” version of how Canada got its name, the one they received from the TV commercial “A Part Of Our Heritage – Canada.” After all, Canadian history is not a subject taught in the schools, per se. Education remains in provincial jurisdiction so each region features their preferred understandings of Canada’s history. As such, there are many competing theories on how Canada came to be known and called. All of them fascinating and equally compelling, but only three theories tend to capture the hearts and minds of historians and researchers more so than the others. They are presented here momentarily.

The political forces, united in the ruling coalition, are members of the former Soviet Colonial Administration of Ukraine. Ninety percent of the members of the coalition were (and some still are) members of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Shocked by the disintegration of the USSR, these forces masked themselves at first, hiding their hostile attitudes to the new state. Having contacts with the secret services of the former empire they cherished hope of returning to the former “paradise.” After becoming the rulers of Ukraine, these forces showed their real anti-Ukrainian feelings.
The Ukraine-EU summit, where the joining of Ukraine to the Free Trade Zone agreement will be decided, will be happening very soon. Such a joining without some preconditions from the side of Europe would be a big economical and political mistake.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on June 21, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych defended the criminal cases launched against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and twelve ministers from her 2007-2010 government. Together with nine leaders of the fall 2010 anti-tax code protests and ten nationalists who admitted to beheading the monument to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin (a crime of ‘hooliganism’) although they have been charged with blowing it up (which is a charge of ‘terrorism’) the list of Ukrainians persecuted for political beliefs is now over 30 - and growing.
It’s a tell tale sign of bad karma coming back to haunt Michael Ignatieff for his past deeds. In the last week before the federal elections wrap up, Jack Layton is outperforming the “Star Tsar” in the popularity category and the New Democrat may very well end up in 2nd place. Iggy and the Liberal Party of Canada just don’t get it. But, if they wanted a loser on their team, they got the best of them. He may even bring the Liberal Party of Canada to an all time historic low, such that it will take them another eight years to recover. They can thank Bob Rae for that. Can it get any worse than that? I’m not sure but it doesn’t bode well for the Liberal leader.
Amazing, right? If non-Ukrainian fiction writers are accurately describing the Holodomor today, can ideologically constipated university academics be far behind? We can only hope.
On February 25, on the first anniversary of his presidency, Viktor Yanukovych invited his three predecessors to his office to “discuss current issues and the future development of the Ukrainian state” http://www.president.gov.ua/news/19454.html. This brief item of information on the president’s official website was illustrated with a photo of the smiling participants at the meeting—Viktor Yushchenko on the left, Leonid Kravchuk on the right, and Leonid Kuchma across the round-table from the incumbent. None of them, with the exception probably of the host, realized that behind its cheerful façade, the meeting resembled one of those Byzantine banquets that would end with the poisoning, slaughtering, or impaling of the distinguished guests.

Similar systems dynamics modeling shows that Putinism in Russia and president Yanukowych regime in Ukraine will suffer a similar fate as did the former Soviet Union.
Ukrainians in Canada have always followed events in Russia closely, especially developments that serve as a barometer of the Kremlin’s domestic and foreign policies. Russia has had a problematic and difficult historical relationship with Ukraine fraught with many painful episodes for Ukrainians, and Russia, like Canada, is home to large communities of Ukrainians residing from Moscow and the Caucasus to the far reaches of Siberia. Thus, what happens in the Russian Federation matters greatly to Ukrainians. This is particularly true at the present time when Ukrainian citizens are trying to create a united, democratic, and prosperous independent state that enjoys mutually beneficial relations with all of Ukraine’s neighbours and is a respected member of the international community.

Here's my preliminary list of early warning signals that point to the decay and collapse of both Russia and Ukraine. Similar conditions and circumstances existed just before the collapse of the Soviet Union exactly 20 years ago
Now that Americans have finished celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it may be worth asking whether Ukraine could ever get such an inspired, and inspirational, leader.
Observe closely how the POR Deputies not only press their own computer to cast a vote in the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine but also that of their colleagues who are not present. Article 84 of the Ukrainian Constitution requires that each National Deputy of Ukraine vote in person. Oddly, this bill receives assent despite the anti-constitutional means of obtaining the vote. Cries of “Shame” are heard on video from Opposition members.
Russia is interfering in Ukraine’s campaign for international recognition of the 1932-1933 Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian nation. Wikileaks revealed this little known until now confidential piece of information on their web site referenced under 08BISHKEK 1095 and dated 2008-10-29. The file is public information now and in it British Prince Andrew speaks to the ”Russian pressure and concomitant anxiety among the locals” following the post-August events in the republic of Georgia. It also details the concerns of Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev which were disclosed to Prince Andrew himself. Here is an excerpt of Prince Andrew’s conversation with President Aliyev, as cited from Section ¶10. (C) of Wikileaks diplomatic cable communication.
The Prime Minister of Canada traveled to Ukraine for an official working visit from October 25 to 26, 2010. Eleven years had passed since the head of Canada’s government visited Ukraine.
The Canadian media reported extensively on Prime Minister Harper's visit to Ukraine. Reports and assessments were quite positive. Similarly the Ukrainian Canadian community was pleased not only with the visit itself but more so with the message the Prime Minister delivered. Although the visit was largely symbolic, PM Harper was resolute in voicing his concerns for human rights and democracy as well as honoring the Ukrainian people.
Officials in the Kremlin and the Russian government are preparing to seek the transformation of the map of Russia, creating 20 giant super-regions centered on major urban agglomerations on top or in place of the 83 existing federal subjects, in response to demographic and economic problems and to promote modernization. ....

From beginning to end, a systematic effort is made to chronologically document the whole Ukrainian-Ignatieff mess in its proper context. The reader learns how and where it all started, and why the Liberal Leader’s character and integrity comes into question. No one should vote for Ignatieff until they read what is in this article.
