If you have recently been promoted in work or volunteerism, or looking forward to a promotion in your near future, there are a few things you need to be aware of.

PR Log (Press Release) – Jan 19, 2010 – I am often am surrounded by very successful people who have either gleaned a promotion or found success, which is wonderful but not the end of the journey but the beginning.
When I coach someone, obviously in executive coaching but often in basic coaching, the emphasis for some people is on their career and we work hard to collaborate for them to gain success or a promotion.
That being said: here is a top ten list of things to remember when the goals are reached.
Don’t be pompous. You have success not drank from the well of eternal knowledge. Keep open-minded.
Change your role with peers. You have a new position and you need to live up to that with boundaries.
Do not steal credit: when your team succeeds do not act like it was your “win” or gain. Share the credit and often, deflect from yourself.
Favoritism is a turn off. Do not play favorites. It’s just tacky and you should be focused on merit and worth to the organization not personality favorites.
Abide by your own rules. Don’t think you can bend the rules for yourself. Whatever you talk, you walk.
Take responsibility, even when it hurts your ego. If you screw up, own it. People respect honestly far more than a you-know-what artist.
Make small changes. Small changes for the better; can make big results. It also shows you are caring and do not overlook the big picture which is not only the bottom line, but that you care for employee satisfaction.
Respect: Show it. Behave it. People who behave respectfully show that they respect others and themselves. If you look, behave, or dress with disrespect you are sending a message, and it isn’t a good one.
Check your ego; if you earned your success or promotion on merit, continue that behavior.
WORK! This is the most overlooked! You are now in a position where you need to not only be good but show that you getting what you deserve IS what you deserve. Be a leader and a problem solver. Show initiative.
