This illness is growing in intensity and number of cases. While you may not know Leadership Development Schizophrenia you may have experienced the symptoms. Unfortunately, this has lead to serious complications with corporate leadership.
PRLog (Press Release) – Oct 16, 2010 – The focus for “Leadership Development” has been on the refinement of skills, and the understanding of models that aid the diagnosis of which skill to apply in which situation when managing human capital.
Unfortunately, this has lead to a serious complication with corporate leadership which many companies have been inflicted with. This illness is growing in intensity and number of cases. While you may not have heard of Leadership Development Schizophrenia you may have experienced some of the symptoms. They include:
1. Leadership Delusions:These are beliefs that are not true, such as feeling employees are trying to intentionally undermine your authority and be covertly insubordinate, believing other employees are talking behind your back, or beliefs that employees have special powers to communicate with the CEO about you. Or that you actually think you are a good leader.
2. Leadership Hallucinations: This usually takes the form of hearing voices that second guess all of the decisions you make, you may also see, smell, taste, and feel things that are putting your job security in jeopardy. You may also see yourself having the skills to manage people.
3. Bizarre Leadership Behavior:This can be expressed in many different ways. In short, individuals behave in ways that seem inappropriate or strange to other people. Like this:
4. Disorganized Leadership Speech: The individual speaks in ways that are hard to understand. For instance, sentences might not make sense, or topic of conversation changes with little or no connection between sentences. Sometimes speech is completely incomprehensible. Remember, like during your last annual appraisal.
5. Negative Leadership Symptoms: This includes lack of motivation or interest, diminished cognitive functioning, and decreased emotional expression. Individuals may lose interest in attending to their own personal hygiene, have little interest in interacting with employees, and rarely seem to feel or express empathy. Okay, I know you just thought of at least 3 past bosses.
This illness, has been beneficial to many, as it has resulted in promotions and greater spans of control. In the long-run, companies would be wise to invest money and time to eradicate this illness from their leadership population. Because the long term prognosis is…no employees left to lead.
Maybe that’s the goal. After all, no employee engagement worries or employee complaints when you have no employees. Is your company in need of a new leadership development model?
