CANADIAN MUSEUM FOR HUMAN RIGHTS — A CALL FOR INCLUSIVENESS, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS

The CMHR represents a unique opportunity for Canada to be recognized as a leader in reflecting and further advancing contemporary research on genocide and human rights and in telling the story of all genocides without any attempt to represent the suffering of one nation, tribe or community as having been of more relevance or importance than any other’s. All attempts to do so argue fundamentally do an injustice to the memory of the many millions of victims of genocide throughout the ages, whether they suffered in Europe, or somewhere else.
How did Canada get its name? Most Canadians, if asked about the origins of the name “Canada”, will admittedly lament their ignorance of that part of Canadian history. Of those that do remember, they might even recall the “official” version of how Canada got its name, the one they received from the TV commercial “A Part Of Our Heritage – Canada.” After all, ...

Juglandaceae nut-producing trees or shrubs have gained tremendous importance in the world not only for their commercial properties but also for their medicinal ones. However, it is the Juglansvariety and walnut among them that is all the rave of many cancer-fighting “Super Foods“ today. Why does the walnut have so much more staying power over other foods? Registered dietitians have picked this super food over others mainly because walnuts are superior to other nuts in protein, vitamins B and E, minerals and fiber in addition to containing higher amounts of plant sterols and omega 3 fatty acids. Could this be whyUkrainians tend to consume walnuts in many of their traditional festive tortes, and ritual dishes such askutia? Traditional Chinese medicine uses juglansto tonify various body part functions which include but are not limited to kidneys, knees, back, lungs and other intestines. New research studies show that eating walnuts with high-fat meals for four monthshelp’s to” decrease inflammation and oxidation in the arteries” and “preserve the elasticity and flexibility of the arteries.”Walnuts received a “qualified health claim in 2004” from the American Food and Drug Administration for these very reasons.
Can Tocopherals in Walnuts Protect the Prostate?
American researchers recently studied how walnuts containing tocopherol influenced the prostate and vascular health of 21 older men at risk for prostate cancer. Experimental subjects followed a two-period cross-over treatment in which they consumed their usual diet plus or minus a nutritional supplement of 75 g isocalorically incorporated walnuts per day. As reprinted from theNutrition Journal 7:13, the 2008 published study results demonstrated that:
triglycerides peaked at 4 h, and gamma-tocopherol (γ-T) increased from 4 to 8 h. Triglyceride – normalized γ-T was two-fold higher (P = 0.01) after 8 versus 4 h. In the supplement study, change from baseline was +0.83 ± 0.52 μmol/L for γ-T, -2.65 ± 1.30 μmol/L for alpha-tocopherol (α-T) and -3.49 ± 1.99 for the tocopherol ratio (α-T: γ-T). A linear mixed model showed that, although PSA did not change, the ratio of free PSA:total PSA increased and approached significance (P = 0.07). The α-T: γ-T ratio decreased significantly (P = 0.01), partly reflecting an increase in serum γ-T, which approached significance (P = 0.08).
Conclusions
This timecourse experiment also reached the following conclusion.
The significant decrease in the α-T: γ-T ratio with an increase in serum γ-T and a trend towards an increase in the ratio of free PSA:total PSA following the 8-week supplement study suggest that walnuts may improve biomarkers of prostate and vascular status.
The results of this short term study clearly show the promising potential for walnuts to positively influence prostate and vascular health. It supports previous research in this area, and is worthy of further long-term evaluation.
