Ukrainian Canadian Social Services (UCSS) - Manitoba Branch
About Our Organization
Ukrainian Canadian Social Services (UCSS) - Manitoba Branch is a self governing, not-for-profit community-based organization that provides comprehensive support services to Ukrainian individuals and families affected by poverty, disaster or neglect. We are also a participating Charter Member organization of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.
Philosophy
All people have the right to an adequate standard of living for themselves and their families, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions.
Mission
To specify and introduce various projects and activities that offer strength, support and solutions to anyone experiencing extensive hardship personally or in the community.
History
UCSS (MB) has a lengthy history of community responsibility. Prior to 1964, social services were provided under the auspices of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee "Aid Fund." The Fund was limited to helping Canada in its war effort and after the war to helping Ukrainian political defectors to come to Canada. On October 29, 1964, the "Aid Fund" reorganized itself into an independent charitable operating agency, known as the UCSS. The first National Office was located in Winnipeg where the first by-laws were written for the Association and all its affiliates. Today, over ten such UCSS offices operate across Canada and one UCSS of Canada, Inc. National Office is stationed in Toronto.
Activity Direction’s Memorandum
The activities of our organization include, but are not limited to:
-Providing social and financial assistance to Manitobans and the Diaspora that are unable to support themselves.
-Assisting refugees and immigrants with their needs.
-Fostering local, national and international partnerships.
-Providing goal-oriented sponsorships.
-Providing assistance for publishing and educational enlightenment activities.
-Recognizing other activities within the legal framework of our organization that will help us to achieve our mission.
About Our Programs and Services
UCSS (MB) was established to address such challenges facing the community. Over the years, the UCSS (MB) Branch has focused on improving what worked, and rectifying what did not. Now, it offers two improved program fund options aimed at enhancing the Branch's comprehensive and supported services.
Local Support Program Fund
Individuals having extensive challenging material or safety needs usually become part of the local support program and receive one to one support. This support is necessary to ensure that each person's safety and well-being is properly accommodated.
In the initial stages of the planning process, we verify their need, and help them identify personal choices. Support systems are reassessed and adapted in the later stages through on-going follow-up and bridge back with family, friends, employers or others in the community.
Pomich Ukraini Program Fund
This program targets the poor and disassociated in Ukraine and the Diaspora who need to survive and cope with the challenges of economic, cultural and social transformation. From time to time, UCSS (MB) Branch consultants will travel to verify that your dollars are going to the neediest and provide recommendations to promote successful service.
