A Fun-Filled Tour Of Vancouver International Airport
posted by Ihor Cap
Learn how an international airport operates. It is a fun-filled tour of a high-tech airport with one of Canada’s top comedians, our very own Rick Mercer. Rick is at Vancouver International Airport just before the Winter Olympics are to take place in February 2010. He is there with an “all access pass and a pocket full of gels….to check out the inner workings at YVR as they prepare to welcome the world.” Vice President of Operations, Don Aaron helps with the guided tour.
You’ll see the high speed computer controlled luggage area and tracking system, with “little eyes reading the bags” as Rick refers to the photo-eye monitoring system. He picks up a bag on the conveyor belt not realizing that the computer has just read the bag as lost in tracking. Uh-oh. “Sorry Gail”, he says. Not to worry though. The Vice-President assures the viewer that “Gail will get her bag.” You will get to see the screening center and confiscated items people tried to take on board the plane with them. Great stuff! Rick is up to his usual hilarious antics that viewers always expect of him.
You will also see the runaway and operating equipment used to clear the tarmac. Four and a half million birds migrate through this airport every year and airport technicians must move over 1.5 million of them a year. Wow! Rick has fun helping shoo them away with his gun loaded with “screamers and bangers”. Neat! This visit would not be complete without seeing the fire department at work. There is a very futuristic looking fire truck on display here. A must see for kids, young and old. I’m telling you. It is one super cool machine. Rick has all the fun, of course. This video contains 6 minutes and 57 seconds of pure unadulterated fun. Enjoy.
