CANADIAN MUSEUM FOR HUMAN RIGHTS — A CALL FOR INCLUSIVENESS, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS

The CMHR represents a unique opportunity for Canada to be recognized as a leader in reflecting and further advancing contemporary research on genocide and human rights and in telling the story of all genocides without any attempt to represent the suffering of one nation, tribe or community as having been of more relevance or importance than any other’s. All attempts to do so argue fundamentally do an injustice to the memory of the many millions of victims of genocide throughout the ages, whether they suffered in Europe, or somewhere else.
How did Canada get its name? Most Canadians, if asked about the origins of the name “Canada”, will admittedly lament their ignorance of that part of Canadian history. Of those that do remember, they might even recall the “official” version of how Canada got its name, the one they received from the TV commercial “A Part Of Our Heritage – Canada.” After all, ...

Do you understand abstract oil paintings
posted on: 2011-07-13 21:20:04
Abstract oil paintings, particulary the nonobjective painting of many artists since the 1940s is arguably devoid of meaning. In fact many artists want it that way. They prefer to see purely compositional factors, the tenets of design as the measure of their works.
Just like Picasso said "Everyone wants to understand art. Why not try to understand the song of a bird?…people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree."
What Pablo says about understanding art is very relative to how we reach abstract oil paintings. Some people think that abstract oil paintings must have a specific meaning, which could be clearly understood and articulated if only they knew how. This conception is not correct, it would not helped by the endless supply of people prepared to spout nonsense about what they think the painter was trying to say. The almost inevitable result is that people can either feel as though they are being excluded from sharing in some secret knowledge, or alternatively conclude that abstract oil painting is actually all a shame. Either way, the result is that many people do not feel well-disposed towards modern canvas art or abstract oil paintings.
The viewer should not look for a clear narrative in an abstract oil painting – as abstract art is not like other style of paintings, it is not going to tell a story, or refer to an external ‘subject’. But it doesn’t mean that there is no meaning or no subject in abstract paintings, or that abstract paintings cannot communicate with and touch people. About subject matter, the Abstract Expressionist artist Jackson Pollock said, "I am the subject". Pollock’s statement is not just true, it is inevitable.
Abstract painters’ experiences, personality, memories and mood cannot help but be fed into the canvas painting if the artist approaches the work in an open and honest way. Abstract artists do not need an external subject or idea before they can create a painting – They simply begin. The colours they choose, the marks a make, the accidents they choose to leave, or to obliterate, these are all things that they choose because of who they are. That is why abstract oil paintings are loved by many people and becore popular in home and office decor.
