CANADIAN MUSEUM FOR HUMAN RIGHTS — A CALL FOR INCLUSIVENESS, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS

The CMHR represents a unique opportunity for Canada to be recognized as a leader in reflecting and further advancing contemporary research on genocide and human rights and in telling the story of all genocides without any attempt to represent the suffering of one nation, tribe or community as having been of more relevance or importance than any other’s. All attempts to do so argue fundamentally do an injustice to the memory of the many millions of victims of genocide throughout the ages, whether they suffered in Europe, or somewhere else.
How did Canada get its name? Most Canadians, if asked about the origins of the name “Canada”, will admittedly lament their ignorance of that part of Canadian history. Of those that do remember, they might even recall the “official” version of how Canada got its name, the one they received from the TV commercial “A Part Of Our Heritage – Canada.” After all, ...

The Smallest and Largest Crabs in the World

Crabs are awesome looking creatures. The astrological sign “Cancer” is also named after a crab. There are fresh water crabs and salt water crabs. They are typically covered with a hard and sometimes soft protective armour. Most crabs live in the sea, but a few live on land as well, like the coconut crab. People also like to eat crabs. Crabs account for some 20% of all marine crustaceans that we catch or harvest and consume worldwide. We eat some 1.5 million tonnes annually.
There are thousands of species of crabs and they come in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes. Most of us have seen a few kinds in real life, perhaps by the beach, in a water tank, zoo or the pet shop. You may even have seen pictures of crabs in a book, on TV or the internet. It may have been the brown rock crab, the bubbler crab, the Christmas Island red crab, the fiddler crab, the freshwater crab, ghost crab, hairy-legged hermit crab, horn-eyed ghost crab, shore crab, surf crab or even the sally light foot crab. However, few of us have ever seen the world’s tiniest crab or the world’s largest crab. It’s not the lice crab that is the smallest, because it is not really considered a crab. It’s not the pea crab either. The pea crab is about the size of a dime.
The smallest crab is much smaller than that. In fact, it’s the little known crustacean called the coral-gall crab (Hapalocarcinidae) that is considered the world’s smallest crab. It lives on the edges or insides of certain corals and it is part of a family of crabs known as Cryptochiridae. It’s about the size of a whole grain of rice and lives inside the holes of corals.
When it comes to the largest crab in the world, there is not a serving plate in the world that could hold this crab. The giant spider crab of Japan, Macrocheira kaempferi, is the largest known crustacean alive. With its claws stretched out, this crab measures a go-getting 3.8 metres (or 12 ft 6 in) and weighs up to 41pounds (or 19 kg). Yikes! Enough to give anyone a scare in the water if you ever meet up with it. That’s bigger than the size of my car! Inspite of its intimidating size, Wikipedia notes that this orange and white in color crab does have a gentle disposition. Let's hope so.
