CANADIAN MUSEUM FOR HUMAN RIGHTS — A CALL FOR INCLUSIVENESS, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS
Featured Article
The CMHR represents a unique opportunity for Canada to be recognized as a leader in reflecting and further advancing contemporary research on genocide and human rights and in telling the story of all genocides without any attempt to represent the suffering of one nation, tribe or community as having been of more relevance or importance than any other’s. All attempts to do so argue fundamentally do an injustice to the memory of the many millions of victims of genocide throughout the ages, whether they suffered in Europe, or somewhere else.
How did Canada get its name? Most Canadians, if asked about the origins of the name “Canada”, will admittedly lament their ignorance of that part of Canadian history. Of those that do remember, they might even recall the “official” version of how Canada got its name, the one they received from the TV commercial “A Part Of Our Heritage – Canada.” After all, ...

Ukrainian Canadian Congress launches joint fundraising campaign in support of African Famine Relief with Canadian Somali Community
"Our community knows firsthand the devastating effects of starvation by famine having lost millions of Ukrainians to the Holodomor. Food is a fundamental human right and access to it should never be denied."

Toronto, Ontario - August 19, 2011-The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) together with the Somali Canadian community today launched a joint campaign to support famine relief. The UCC's famine relief efforts are being led by former Member of Parliament Borys Wrzesnewskyj.
"I am pleased to announce that the Ukrainian Canadian Congress is launching this campaign in cooperation with the Somali community in Canada to raise awareness and funds for African famine relief. Our community knows firsthand the devastating effects of starvation by famine, having lost millions of Ukrainians to the Holodomor. The world ignored the murder of the Ukrainian people in 1932-33 - we cannot let the world and Canadians ignore the plight of the Somali people. Food is a fundamental human right and access to it should never be denied," stated UCC National President Paul Grod.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress Charitable and Educational Trust will be accepting donations until September 16, 2011, which are earmarked "African Famine Relief" and will be providing these donations for direct famine relief efforts in Somalia. These donations will qualify for dollar matching under the federal government's East Africa Drought matching fund program.
"This really means so much to us. We feel that the Ukrainian-Canadian community really understands what is happening in Somalia and is taking a lead in helping to alleviate the horrific plight of Somalis suffering and dying from hunger. This understanding stems from the memory of the Holodomor of the 1930s. In this our two peoples share a common historical and painful experience of man-made famine. We strongly urge other communities in Toronto and the rest of Canada to follow the Ukrainian-Canadian community's lead in looking to end the famine in Somalia," stated Hassan Adan, Project Relief Coordinator, Project ARAN.
"One of the fundamental and most basic of human rights is the right to nourishment-the right to food. Ukrainian-Canadians are especially sensitive to the images of famine due to their historical and very personal recollections of the Holodomor in Ukraine. The Holodomorwas the first genocidal famineand was methodically plannedand perpetrated by the Soviet regime of Joseph Stalin in an effort to destroy the Ukrainian nation," stated Borys Wrzesnewskyj. "The graphic images of famine-starved children in Somalia compel us as a community to collectively reach out to save lives in memory of those millions who starved during the Holodomor while the world stood by silently. The famine in Somalia further illustrates both the suffering and horror that occurs when people are deprived of their fundamental right to food."
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress will be working with UNICEF to ensure that the funds reach the people who are most in need on the ground. The funds raised through this program will be matched by the federal government's East Africa drought fund matching program
Charitable donations for the "African Famine Relief" may be sent to the UCC Head office in Winnipeg at: 952 Main Street - Suite 203, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2W 3P4, or online at www.ucc.ca.
