Time for the Minister to intervene and resolve this controversy. It won't go away, even after the election. This is a taxpayer funded national museum, not a private project. It does not matter whose idea it was originally or who gave generously in support of it. Just because you're rich doesn't mean you can buy yourself a hall in a Canadian national museum or secure a permanent seat on its board of trustees. Since the public purse will cover most of the development and operational costs of this national museum, in perpetuity, the views of taxpayers like us as to this museum's contents, goals and character are not only legitimate but must be addressed. They haven't been to date.
The Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association has consistently stated that all 12 of the CMHR's 12 galleries should be thematic, comparative and inclusive, focused primarily on Canadian stories. No group's suffering should be elevated above all others with permanent or privileged space. To resolve this divisive and unhappy situation the Government of Canada must convene independent hearings, involving all who have voiced their concerns, not only to review the proposed contents and governance of this national institution but to chart its way forward. That is the only way now for the people of Canada to get what they overwhelmingly want - a Canadian Museum for Human Rights, not wrongs.
