CANADIAN MUSEUM FOR HUMAN RIGHTS — A CALL FOR INCLUSIVENESS, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS
Featured Article
The CMHR represents a unique opportunity for Canada to be recognized as a leader in reflecting and further advancing contemporary research on genocide and human rights and in telling the story of all genocides without any attempt to represent the suffering of one nation, tribe or community as having been of more relevance or importance than any other’s. All attempts to do so argue fundamentally do an injustice to the memory of the many millions of victims of genocide throughout the ages, whether they suffered in Europe, or somewhere else.
How did Canada get its name? Most Canadians, if asked about the origins of the name “Canada”, will admittedly lament their ignorance of that part of Canadian history. Of those that do remember, they might even recall the “official” version of how Canada got its name, the one they received from the TV commercial “A Part Of Our Heritage – Canada.” After all, ...

Liberal MP’s Bill a Victory for Italian-Canadians
April 29, 2010
OTTAWA – The long sought goal of the Italian-Canadian community for recognition of the suffering it endured during World War II took a significant leap forward yesterday as Bill C-302, the Italian-Canadian Recognition and Restitution Act, a bill introduced by Mr. Massimo Pacetti, Liberal Member of Parliament for Saint-Léonard / Saint-Michel, was adopted by the House of Commons will full support from the opposition parties.
“This is a clear statement by Members of Parliament to the Italian-Canadian community,” stated Mr. Pacetti. “70 years after the fact, the government must now react and acknowledge that the Italian-Canadian community was unfairly treated by the government during World War II as a result of internment and their designation as “enemy aliens”.
The main components of this legislation are the issuance of an official apology in the House of Commons for the internment of Italian-Canadians during World War II and the creation of an educational fund to be administered by reputable Italian-Canadian community organizations in order to inform Canadians about internment and to foster cultural harmony throughout Canada.
“Members of the Liberal Party feel that this is an important piece of legislation for people of Italian roots,” affirmed Mr. Pacetti. “Canada is great because it is a country that has the courage to own up to past mistakes with dignity and respect. There’s no doubt that the government of a previous generation made a mistake in persecuting law abiding Canadians but with the benefit of history and hindsight, our generation can be the one to apologize for this and at the same time learn from the past in order to not repeat it in the future. This is a bill about Canadians apologizing to other Canadians in order to build a bridge of respect, understanding and friendship.”
“I hope that C-302 is approved by the Senate in a timely fashion so that we can move on and actually build this bridge as strong and united Canadians,” added Anita Neville, Liberal Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre.
